“One amusing instance of this occurred when Jane arranged to entertain a group of actor friends to dinner, unaware that Paul had simultaneously invited Sue and me to meet him at Cavendish Avenue. We were supposed to go on to Abbey Road with John Lennon, who was going to be there as well. Jane’s friends, six or seven people, were clearly nervous at having Paul and John hovering in the background, working out small details of one of their songs. Though they tried to concentrate on their own company, their attention kept drifting as John and Paul moved around the room and sometimes joined their table. John was in a difficult mood, unpredictable and snappy. All the same, Jane’s guests tried to draw him into the conversation and treat him like any other person. One of the women asked if he knew where the ashtray was. John dropped to his knees beside her and prised open his left nostril. ‘Put it here, lady, put it here.’ Everyone laughed, but a little nervously because John didn’t seem to be joining in the joke. He remained crouching until the woman blushed and Jane, seeing her discomfort, pushed John over with her foot. He rolled over on his back, his feet in the air.”

“As is one’s wont in relationships, you will from time to time argue or not see eye to eye on things, and a couple of the songs around this period were that kind of thing. This one I remember particularly as me being disillusioned over her commitment.” Paul assumed that Jane’s real intent was to be away from him, saying: “She went down to the Bristol Old Vic quite a lot around this time. Suffice it to say that this (song) was probably related to that romantic episode and I was seeing through her façade. And realizing that it wasn’t quite all that it seemed. I would write it out in a song and then I’ve got rid of the emotion. I don’t hold grudges so that gets rid of that little bit of emotional baggage. I remember specifically this one being about that, getting rid of some emotional baggage.”

PAUL SAYS, “I’M MAKING SECRET LOVE-MOVIES WITH JANE!”

With Paul being so talented in all creative areas, it’s no wonder that he’s become interested in photography. And his favorite subject at this very moment is Jane Asher!

Paul confided, “I’d say my photos sessions with Jane are certainly labors of love. She’s so beautiful, with that gorgeous red hair, she’s a joy to photograph!”

Very often, Paul will take Jane out into the country, to pose her with trees and flowers and running water. He’ll take experimental shots, too, with different effects of lighting and strange angles.

“My favorites, though,” he told us, “are the home movies I take of Jane, when we’re just fooling around together. After we’re married, I predict we’ll spend many a happy time looking over those movies and joking about them. They’re not exactly suitable for showing on your neighborhood movie screen, but they’re funny and cute. And I like them. In fact, I love them!”

Jane, on the other hand, has announced privately that she’d like to turn the tables on her handsome friend and take some photos of him when he’s not looking.

“I’ll bet they’ll be worth plenty,” she laughs and says. “I could blackmail Paul forever!”

So if you’ve got a very tiny camera with some very tiny film, you know just where to send it. But don’t forget to send us prints, too!
